District-Wide Phishing Simulation: Strengthening Our Cybersecurity
Last week, all staff participated in a district-wide phishing simulation designed to reinforce best practices in email security and build confidence in identifying phishing attempts. This exercise wasn’t about catching anyone off guard; it was about supporting our collective cybersecurity readiness.
The simulation included two scenarios:

1. Google Security Alert: A phishing email appearing to come from noreply@glooglonline.com claimed a new device had signed into the recipient’s account, urging them to "Check Activity."
2. Document Share Request: A spear-phishing attempt impersonating Amy Banks (amyB@glooglonline.com) claimed to share a confidential document titled “Confidential: RTA Negotiations Salary Starter,” prompting recipients to sign in to view it.

The results showed that many staff were able to recognize and ignore these phishing attempts, with only 0.28% attempting to log in via the phishing links, indicating strong awareness and caution.
A single compromised account can provide hackers with access to sensitive staff and student data. Strengthening our awareness and response helps protect not only individual users but our entire district community.
Next Steps

• We will continue to share best practices for spotting phishing emails.
• Some staff will receive refresher training to enhance email security awareness.
• The district will conduct phishing simulations three times annually. Future simulations will become increasingly realistic and customizable, better reflecting the evolving nature of phishing threats. This approach supports our commitment to cybersecurity, ensures compliance with our Cyber Insurance Policy, and promotes ongoing vigilance across the district.
